How do you replace a broken window?

Replacing broken windows is one of the most common home improvement tasks. The task consists of repairing damage caused to the glass inside your house. Repair work in this instance should take no more than 30 minutes. But if you do not know how to replace a broken pane of glass, then you risk causing further damage to the house. This article contains some tips to help you replace a damaged window.

First, remove the old glass from its frame

To remove the old glass, you must first lift out the screws holding the windowpane in place. Then undo the lock at the top center of the bottom section of the window frame. Next, move the window up slightly to remove it from the sill plate (the bar that runs below the floor). Use a plier to loosen any remaining screws. After the panes have been removed from the window, clean them well.

Next step: Clean the glass

Use a dry cloth or paper towel to wipe away any dirt from the surface of the glass. You can clean the glass with a spray bottle containing water and rubbing alcohol if there is any debris underneath.

Third Step: Reinstall the replacement glass

Attach the window frames to the panes. Use a screwdriver to push the outermost edge of your pane down. Gently push the pane into the opening of the frame. Then move to the next pane, pushing it firmly against the previous pane before reattaching it. Continue inserting the panes until the entire window is assembled. To seal the area where the panes meet, use a silicone caulk gun.

Fourth step: Repair the damaged area

If you are installing new glass, be sure to inspect the area where the break occurred. This will help determine if further repairs are necessary. In the event that the hole is located near the corner of your window, place two small pieces on either side of it. These wooden blocks will add strength to the window while also acting as spacers to keep the glass in place during the expansion and contraction of the weatherproofing material.

Fiveth step: Seal the repair area

After the glass is replaced, apply silicone caulking to all edges of your window frame. This will seal the glass to the wallboard. You can purchase silicone caulking at hardware stores or online. Choose a color that matches your walls.

Allow the caulking time to dry overnight. You should not disturb the caulking after it has fully hardened. If you don't wait long enough, you could cause the caulking to crack when you remove it.
