How To

How do you replace a broken window?

The most common home improvement task is to replace broken windows. This task involves repairing any damage to your glass. In this case, the repair work should only take around 30 minutes. But if you do not know how to replace a broken pane of glass, then you risk causing further damage to the house. This article contains some tips to help you replace a damaged window.

First step: Remove the old glass from its frame

To remove the old windowpane, you will first need to take out the screws that held it in place. Next, remove the lock at the top of the lower section of your window frame. Next, raise the window so it isn't attached to the sillplate (the metal strip below the floor). Finally, use a pry tool to carefully loosen the remaining screws until they pop out of their holes. After the panes are taken off, thoroughly clean them.

Second step: Clean and polish the new glass

You can wipe any dirt off the glass surface with a towel or a dry cloth. If debris is stuck under the glass, try cleaning it with a spray bottle filled with water and rubbing alcohol.

Third Step: Reinstall the replacement glass

Attach the window panes to the frames. With the tip of a screwdriver, push down on the bottom edge of the outermost window pane. Gently push down on the lower edge of the outermost pane with the tip of a screwdriver. Next, insert the next pane by pressing it against the first pane. Continue inserting the panes until the entire window is assembled. Use a silicone caulk gun to seal the space where the panes meet.

Fourth step: Repair the damaged area

If you are installing new glass, be sure to inspect the area where the break occurred. This will help determine if further repairs are necessary. Two small pieces of wood should be placed along the edges of each hole if the crack is near the corner. These wooden blocks will strengthen the window while acting as spacers for the glass during expansion and contraction of the weatherproofing.

The fifth step is to seal the area.

After replacing the glass, you can apply silicone caulking along the perimeter edges to the window frame. This will create a strong seal between glass and surrounding wallboard. Silicone caulking is available at hardware stores as well as online. Make sure you choose a color that is consistent with the wall's existing paint.

Finally, let the caulking cure overnight. After the caulking has dried completely, do not disturb it. You may crack the caulking by not waiting long enough.
