How To
How do you replace a broken window?
One of the most popular home improvement projects is to replace broken windows. The job involves repairing the damage done to the glass in your home. In this case, the repair work should only take around 30 minutes. The problem is that you might end up with further damage to your home if the glass pane breaks. This article provides some tips on replacing a broken window.
First step: Remove the old glass from its frame
To remove the old windowpane, you will first need to take out the screws that held it in place. The lock located at the top middle of the bottom portion of the window frame must be undone. Next, lift the window slightly up so that it is no longer attached the sill plate (the steel bar at the floor). The last step is to gently loosen all remaining screws with a tool. Once the panes are removed, clean them thoroughly.
Second step: Clean the new glass
You can wipe any dirt off the glass surface with a towel or a dry cloth. To remove any dirt or other debris from the glass' surface, spray it with water and rub alcohol.
Third step: Reinstall the new glass
Attach the window frames to the panes. Begin by pressing down on the outermost pane's lower edge with a screwdriver. Gently push the pane into the opening of the frame. Next, move on to the next pane and press it against the frame before attaching it. Continue inserting the windows until they are all assembled. Seal the area where the panes meet with silicone caulk gun.
Fourth step: Repair the damage
If you are installing new glass, be sure to inspect the area where the break occurred. This will help determine if further repairs are necessary. Install two pieces of small wood on each side of any hole if the break was near the corner. These wooden blocks will be strong and can also act as spacers, keeping the glass in its place during expansion and contract of the weatherproofing.
Fifth Step: Seal the repaired area
After the glass has been replaced, apply a bead of silicone caulking to the perimeter edges of the window frame. This will create a good seal between the glass and the surrounding wallboard. You can buy silicone caulking online or at hardware shops. Be sure to choose a color that matches the existing paint on the walls.
Let the caulking set overnight. The caulking should be left to harden completely before you disturb it. You may crack the caulking by not waiting long enough.
