How do I replace a damaged window?

It is one of the most commonly performed home improvements. The task consists of repairing damage caused to the glass inside your house. The repair should take approximately 30 minutes. If you don't know how to replace broken glass, you could cause more damage to your home. This article contains some tips to help you replace a damaged window.

First, remove the old glass from its frame

To take out the old glass, first remove the screws that hold it in place. Next, remove the lock at the top of the lower section of your window frame. Next, raise the window so it isn't attached to the sillplate (the metal strip below the floor). The last step is to gently loosen all remaining screws with a tool. After the panes have been removed from the window, clean them well.

Second step: Clean and polish the new glass

Use a dry towel or paper towel to clean the glass. If debris is stuck under the glass, try cleaning it with a spray bottle filled with water and rubbing alcohol.

Third Step: Reinstall the replacement glass

Attach the window panes to the frames. With the tip of a screwdriver, push down on the bottom edge of the outermost window pane. Gently push your pane back into its opening. Move on to the next piece of pane. Push it into the opening in the frame. Continue inserting the windows until they are all assembled. You can seal the spaces where the panes meet using a silicone caulk pistol.

Fourth step: Repair the damaged area

When installing the new glass, inspect the area around the hole to determine whether any additional repairs are needed. Inspect the area around the window for cracks near the corners. If so, add two small pieces wood to each side. These wooden blocks will provide strength for the window, as well as acting as spacers during the expansion or contraction of the weatherproofing.

Fiveth step: Seal the repair area

After replacing the glass, you can apply silicone caulking along the perimeter edges to the window frame. This will create a good seal between the glass and the surrounding wallboard. Silicone caulking is available at hardware stores as well as online. Make sure you choose a color that is consistent with the wall's existing paint.

Allow the caulking to cure overnight. Do not disturb the caulking until it has hardened completely. You could crack the caulking if you wait too long.
