How do I replace a cracked window?

Replacing broken windows is one of the most common home improvement tasks. The job involves repairing the damage done to the glass in your home. This repair will take only 30 minutes. The problem is that you might end up with further damage to your home if the glass pane breaks. This article contains some tips to help you replace a damaged window.

First, take the old glasses out of their frames

To remove the old glass, you must first lift out the screws holding the windowpane in place. Next, remove the lock at the top of the lower section of your window frame. Next, raise the window so it isn't attached to the sillplate (the metal strip below the floor). Next, remove any remaining screws using a pry instrument until they are loosen. After the panes have been removed, you should clean them thoroughly.

Second step: Clean your new glass

You can wipe any dirt off the glass surface with a towel or a dry cloth. You can clean the glass with a spray bottle containing water and rubbing alcohol if there is any debris underneath.

Third Step: Reinstall new glass

Then, attach the window panes back into the frames. Use a screwdriver to push the outermost edge of your pane down. Gently push down on the lower edge of the outermost pane with the tip of a screwdriver. After moving to the next one, push it firmly against your previous one before you reattach it. Continue inserting panes until all windows are assembled. You can seal the spaces where the panes meet using a silicone caulk pistol.

Fourth step: Repair the damage

If you are installing new glass, be sure to inspect the area where the break occurred. This will help determine if further repairs are necessary. Inspect the area around the window for cracks near the corners. If so, add two small pieces wood to each side. These wooden blocks will give strength to the window and act as spacers between the glass and the weatherproofing material.

Fifth step: Seal the repaired area

Apply silicone caulking around the edges of the frame after the glass has been replaced. This will create a strong seal between glass and surrounding wallboard. You can find silicone caulking in hardware stores and online. Choose a color that matches your walls.

Allow the caulking to cure overnight. Do not disturb the caulking until it has hardened completely. You can cause cracking in the caulking if it isn't left enough time.
