How To

How to Install A Receptacle Box

When installing any type of electrical outlet, you should always follow the guidelines your local building inspector set forth. This includes ensuring the correct installation and that there is no water damage or fire hazard.

The majority of boxes come prewired, with four wires coming out of the breaker panel. The black and red wires will run through the box to one end, while the white and red wires will go to the other end. When connecting wires together, you must ensure that the wire nuts and wire wraps are not used. If you do this, it will be difficult for the wires not to stick in their place once they are tightened. You want them to be free enough to move around but still tight enough not to pull from their holes.

A second piece of hardware might be required if you wish to add a receptacle or container to an existing box. You will need to remove the metal box's top and attach a cover plate. Once the hole is made for the new receptacle and the cover plate is attached, you would need to connect all of the wires to the new receptacle.

You may not need a licensed electrician to replace the existing light switches in your home. To begin, you need to remove the old light switch from its mounting point. The next step is to unplug any wires attached to the switch. These wires include power going into the switch itself and the ones that supply electricity to the lights in the room where the switch is located. Once you have disconnected all of it, you can begin the replacement process.

Once you have removed the old switch, measure the distance between wall studs and mark it with a permanent marker. Once you've done this, you need to decide if the switch should be placed high above or low to the floor. You will need to drill holes for the mounting bracket depending on how high the switch is to be mounted. Or you can attach it directly to the wall with drywall anchors.

After the measurements are taken and the locations have been marked up, it's time to get started. You can begin removing the drywall around the area where the switch is to be installed with the assistance of a friend or relative. Make sure to leave about 8 inches of space between each stud so you don't accidentally cut the cable inside the wall. Next, install the switch by attaching the brackets to it. After attaching the cables to the switch, you will need to secure it to the mounting plates. Once the switch has been fully installed, you will need to turn the power back on and test the newly added device to ensure it works properly.
