How To

How do you replace a broken window?

The most common home improvement task is to replace broken windows. This task involves repairing any damage to your glass. Repair work in this instance should take no more than 30 minutes. However, if you are not familiar with how to replace broken panes of glass, you may cause further damage to the home. This article will give you some helpful tips for replacing broken windows.

First, take the old glasses out of their frames

To remove the old glass, you must first lift out the screws holding the windowpane in place. Next, undo the lock in the middle of the bottom section. Next, lift the window slightly up so that it is no longer attached the sill plate (the steel bar at the floor). Use a plier to loosen any remaining screws. After the panes have been removed from the window, clean them well.

Step 2: Clean the new glasses

To remove dirt and grime from the glass' surface, use a paper towel or dry cloth. You can clean the glass with a spray bottle containing water and rubbing alcohol if there is any debris underneath.

Third Step: Reinstall new glass

Reattach the window panels to the frames. With the tip of a screwdriver, push down on the bottom edge of the outermost window pane. Gently push the pane into the opening of the frame. Then move to the next pane, pushing it firmly against the previous pane before reattaching it. Continue inserting the windows until they are all assembled. You can seal the gap between the panes with a silicone caulk gun.

Fourth step: Repair the damage

If you are installing new glass, be sure to inspect the area where the break occurred. This will help determine if further repairs are necessary. Two small pieces of wood should be placed along the edges of each hole if the crack is near the corner. These wooden blocks will strengthen the window while acting as spacers for the glass during expansion and contraction of the weatherproofing.

Fifth Step: Seal the repaired area

After the glass has had to be replaced, apply silicone caulking at the perimeter edges. This will create a seal between the glass frame and the wallboard. Silicone caulking can be purchased at hardware stores and online. Make sure you choose a color that is consistent with the wall's existing paint.

Let the caulking dry overnight. The caulking should be left to harden completely before you disturb it. You can cause cracking in the caulking if it isn't left enough time.
